Comments: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: antihatehike@excite.com September 7, 1999 Disabled People Hike Against Hate And Violence Of the almost countless websites for Matthew Shepard, only one actuallycaught international attention. Created by Lee Thompson, the site www.matthewsplace.com now belongs to Matthew's mother, Judy Shepard, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Thompson's efforts raised an awareness among thousands of people worldwideabout hate and violence in today's society and the need to get involved in the fight against it. His work helped raise many hundreds of thousands of dollars for anti hate organizations around the country. Thompson was the creator of the International Hike Against Hate and Violence which eventually had the support of over twenty national organizations, and over 170 international Teddy Bear Artists. Even Elton John phoned Thompson regarding the project and praised his work. With no organizational skills and a disorder which nobody involved knew of,Thompson became overwhelmed and exhausted. He was hospitalized in March and his dream fizzled. Until now. Thompson plans to hike with others who are disabled beginning next week in Wyoming. There is no affiliation to any organization and the group asks that people keep the anti hate movement alive by, "walking the talk" and educating their children against hate and violence. "People who are disabled as well as those who are not, are urged to stand with us. We know first hand what it is like to be shunned and discriminated against because of wrong perceptions. Everyone needs to stand together and say enough. Let's stop hurting each other because of our differences. It's about ALL types of hate and violence, not just some. It's about hiking against the hate in me and the hate in you. For me personally, It's also about keeping my promise to the victim's. Keeping the promise to those who supported me. By finishing what I started, the hike, I will have done what I set out to do. I will I hope, be stronger for it." The group hopes that people will support their efforts by joining them should they enter their town. "We need food, lodging, and people to join us. We are excepting no donations for any organizations. We hope people will support the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the entire anti hate movement. " An itinerary has not been made public for safety reasons. It will be available on several websites on September 14, 1999. The hike will last 2-4 weeks and is being digitally recorded. It can be seen at www.PlanetOut.com To join or support the hike, write to: antihatehike@excite.com

Comments: If Rev. Phelps reads this good, because God also said, and I quote, "Love thy neighbor." That doesn't imply that you can love whoever you chose to, you love everyone. I don't "Hate" Rev. Phelps, but I dislike him very much because of his ignorance and unwillingness to accept people's differences. I'm not very good at stuff like this so I hope it makes sense :-)

Comments: The most important reason for living is to serve each other. To help each other. To make this world a better place for all of God’s creations. Our time on this world is limited, so we all must make the most of it. There is simply no time for hate. Almost all bad marks in history have resulted from hate…hate against another person, race, person’s possession’s, etc. Rather than lashing out at someone just because they’re different, search for what is good in that person and add those good qualities to yours. Don’t let such trivial things like gender and race get in the way, for we are much more alike than different. Use each other to make each other better human beings, not teachers of hatred and violence. Sure, we must all be individuals. I am not telling you to not think and speak your own mind, but rather to use your God given abilities to help the common good and make our society one in which everyone is proud to be a part of. A person is not truly part of a society until he or she has had an impact on the environment that surrounds him. The least you could do is to not make your impact on your surrounding environment a negative one. It is much easier to destroy a good thing than it is to create one. If you spend your life trying to tear down society, not only will you be spending eternity in a non-forgiving place, but you also have wasted at least one other person’s life, maybe more. I say this because it will take an entire lifetime of a righteous person to fix the damage which you have created. Deep down, everybody knows the right decision in any given situation. I am simply asking you to listen to that voice that helps you live a good life and which helps create a better world. One thing that I much mention, and which all you must understand, is that before you go and try to make things better, we must first make certain that the precious, unreplaceable things that we hold dear, and which make our quality of life great, are preserved for all time. We must take care of the environment, for nature is a taste of Heaven on Earth, and we only have a limited supply. We must continue giving children the quality education that they deserve, for they are the future. We must also never forget, and always help, those which are less fortunate that ourselves. Everyone has the freedom of choice. This is what I believe to be our most sacred freedom. All that I ask is that you please consider what I have said and I hope that you follow your heart and do what you know to be right. Please, STOP THE VIOLENCE BY STOPPING THE HATE!! Comments: For people in the Denver area, there is a conference on violence you may be interested in attending. The conference is titled "The Roots of Violence and the Source of Hope: The Gospel at Work in the World." This is an Ecumenical Conference sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado. Location - At the University of Denver - Governor's Hall - 2055 E.Evans Ave. Time - FRIDAY EVENING, AUGUST 20, 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and SATURDAY, August 21, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will also be a conference for youth on Sunday Afternoon, August 22. The cost seems reasonable to me. Many conferences are much more expensive. Please do not take my word for this conference. Please confirm all of the information. The internet address for information is http://www.coloradodiocese.org/rootsconf.html If you have problems going there directly, it is on the Episcopal Colorado Diocese web site. You need to go to the forum section and then click on the post titled "Conference on Understanding Violence."

Comments: Hello, I lived in GOLD BAR, STARTUP & SULTAN from 93 to FEB. 98! At one time I lived at 117-A CROFT & am still the owner of a NONPROFIT CO. that I was running there. I got toys for children at Christmas & ran a small thrift shop from there to! The name of this CO. was & still is THE AGAPE CHAIN! I was known as DAVID CONRAD! I have gone through MANY HUGE CHANGES since that time. (Least of the changes is my new name of DONNA MARIE ROYCE!) While I was living there I had a MASSIVE HEART ATTACK & am lucky to be alive! Part of the reason for the attack was the fact that I was fighting the fact that I'M TRANSSEXUAL for 30 years! In coming out with this fact I have lost my Wife (CAMILLE) but gained my health! I was living in SULTAN when I came out & was ATTACKED twice by 2 sperate sets of DRUNKS for being "QUEER"! This caused my DR. to recommend that I move to MINNESOTA where the laws would protect me from this kind of attack & where I could get my SRS (Sexual Reassignment Surgery) without much of a hassle! I have much to tell the people back HOME in GOLD BAR! Please call me ASAP & I will fill you in! I am STILL a night owl & am up MOST OF THE NIGHT! (4:32 AM NOW!) I do wish I had known you people had been there when I came out! It might have made it easier to stay there rather then move to MINNEAPOLIS for safety! I do miss my Mountains & Trees there! Comments: The Revernd Fred Phelps, who calls himself "John Wayne Gacy" (perhaps with more truth than he realizes) has finally visited. I suppose I should be surprised he didn't do so before. In a sense, he unwittingly serves a good purpose: his site is an excellent display of sheer blinded hate. Presently, it's directed against gays. In another day, it would have been directed against Jews. It will be directed elsewhere tomorrow, possibly against the overweight or smokers. It is no bad thing to be reminded that this state of mind exists, and how evil it really is. For it is really evil, and Mr. Phelps shows every sign of being a genuinely evil man. I pray he is not committing the one sin which the Bible does describe as unforgiveable: the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. For make no mistake about it, his site and message are blasphemous and sacriligeous. I say that as a serious and committed Christian. Mr. Phelps has arrogated himself something which belongs to God, and ONLY to God. Nobody else has any right to pass judgement on anyone's fate in the next life. Everything about Mr. Phelps suggests that he has put God down from the Seat of Judgement, and put the idol of his own monumental ego in God's place. Does he quote the Bible? Satan can do that, and very well too (see Matthew, 4, 1-6; Luke 4, 1-12 for examples). Phelps, like Satan uses Scripture to warp, distort, and destroy the message of the Gospel. Consciously or not, he is an agent of Satan. "By their fruits shall ye know them". The graphic which Mr. Phelps has worked so charitably on, and which appears on his entry tells what he is. If he does not change his ways, that graphic will pursue and haunt him for the rest of his time on earth, and stand to his judgement and condemnation in the next.Strange to say, he may never recognize that. It's hard to avoid thinking that his Heaven would be Hell to everyone else, and his Hell our Heaven.

Comments: Below is a message from the Phelps God Hates Fags group. They are crying out for help and I for one intend to pray that the horrible hate which has taken over their souls, will be removed so that they too can become caring compassionate individuals. Their display here shows us why we must be vigilant and continue in our efforts to end the hate. Mr. Phelps and people like him do in fact insight violence. They remind us how far we have to go.

The ones who were not, threatened me as well as did everything they could to undermine my efforts. They recieved a severe blow today when my family was contacted by officials and told of my exhauneration! Thank you to all of those who stood with me. To those who left my side, what you did made me stronger, thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments: July 17, 1999 To Whom It May Concern, During the last nine months, I have learned a great deal about myself as well as others. I have learned that I alone cannot conquer the disorder which was born into me from childhood trauma. I shall be in inpatient treatment for the remainder of the summer and hope I can learn to manage my disorder. If I can, I will be able to treat not only others with respect , but myself as well. I have been asked by a major international relief agency as well as a high profile individual, to help promote a project which assists children and young who have been abused both physically , and emotionally. The project is to be launched in September. The agency and the individual, have watched the projects I began from the beginning. They are also extremely aware of the downfalls. I have stated that I would make no commitment to this effort until my inpatient treatment is concluded and that I would only do so afterwards, only if the project includes includes children and young people of all sexual orientations. The agency agreed. Next year, there will also be a book out that will benefit a child abuse prevention program, a treatment center for traumatized and abused adolescents/children, and an organization that promotes tolerance and acceptance through educating parents of young people. No individual's will profit and the publishers have agreed to the same. One thing that I feel I must not be ashamed of any longer is my disorder. I am one of the few males diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. My disorder was caused by two factors. One was the delay in attachment to the uterine wall of my mother during gestation. The other was childhood trauma. Both of these were obviously beyond my control. One of the symptoms of this disorder is "self mutilation". Another would be what others would perceive as excessively sensitive or over emotional. (This one by the way can be a blessing or a curse). All of my life I have physically hurt myself. I have always hated being gay or bisexual. I have a lot of times wanted to die because of it. I have always felt that I could never allow anyone to love me. Why should I, they would just leave anyway. Being raised in a Pentecostal foster home made things even worse. Then afterwards being beaten by my mother and hospitalized because she found out I was gay or bisexual. All of these things that happen not only to myself, but to other children who are now my age or older, contribute to the significant percentage of Mental Illness which plagues the gay community to at least, some degree. How many gay, bisexual, transgendered individuals do you know that you can definitively say have no physiological problems relating directly to sexual orientation issues? I dare say, not many. I had hoped that by being part of a wonderful project and by just listening and offering an ear those in pain, somehow, this would take mine away. Instead, I created more within myself and pushed away those that the "normal" part of me, truly loves. Recently, I cut on myself a lot. I wanted to die. I hurt people and myself by my lack of professionalism and my lack of trust. The one thing I truly will never regret is trying. Someday, I hope those people who feel hurt by me, can find it in their hearts to forgive and possibly care enough to learn more about this disorder which leads to an enormous amount of suicides. Having BPD has hindered me all of my life and I know now from what was created by me during the last nine months, if it can be controlled through treatment learning a new way of life. I can be a better person and truly give something back and help others so that they do not have to endure the same eternal hell they suffer because of childhood trauma and ignorance. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to those who have stayed in touch and encouraged me to go on living. While the recent events have caused me to have to file personal bankruptcy, a part of me believes that indeed, it was worth the financial loss. "I would like to think that society will someday not only take responsibility for the physiological mess it has created within my generation, as well as those before and still to come in regards to sexual orientation. But that we together as human beings, will someday, learn to just let them be themselves without condition and/or fear of prejudice, from anyone including ourselves. Only then shall we truly find a world filled with more kindness and true compassion". Should any of you care to learn more about BPD, please visit http://www.bpdcentral.com Thank you for your time and please stay in touch through friends of IHAVE Forum. Sincerely, Lee Thompson

Comments: This message goes out to Janice Appelton! After reveiwing your statements about me without even Knowing the type of person I am , I've come up to one conclusion and it seems that you are the one that is filled with resentment and hate. Please review what this is all about , I was introduced to Lee Thompson by Judy Sheppard she ask me to help him which I believe I did. I went out of my way to help the cause Regardless of which celebrity was involved as I mentioned that to Lee.Everytime he paged me which was over 100 times in the short relationship it cost me monies. I coordinated his flight to Larimie Wy through my travel agency with no monies Lee stated he had no money for the phone bill I sent him $1,300.00 check $300.00 which is a loan. Lee stated he needed a camcorder so he ask to help , so I sent him a brand new one. When Lee stated Elton dropped the ball I mentioned to him to stop Putting Elton John on the pedestal and go on.Weeks went by and Lee called me and stated that he and Judy Shepard met and figured that I was know longer interested in getting involved because of Elton Johns non participating staus. That was a very big insult to me .First of all Mathew Sheppards friend in Co, confirmed Judy Shepard never said that. Janis there are alot of insults that Lee Thompson has made towards me and I would rather not go into that. I wish everyone, including you, the very best in life if its hate and violence which is on your agenda to help stomp, may I suggest not to criticize anyone until you know who they are. I hope this sight continues to spread positive message's so I would like to leave you with one. HATE AND VIOLENCE CAN BE CONQUERED THROUGH LOVE AND CELEBRATION PEACE jose luis partida

Comments: My God, just look at the hate in here. This gentleman who not only changed his life but so many others along the way deserves much better than the likes of these evil spirits. Having been close to it all and watching, I have seen first hand the Quilt project start not as claimed below, but in October after Matthew's death because of it. I Have seen the quilt pieces displayed at a donated art space that was given to Lee for his art the month of December. The ornaments decorated by ill people to help defray the costs of all of this work. The undying demands fro Jose partida that lee (make) Mrs. Shepard interview with Nue Visions (only) and their concern only that Elton help raise funds for their documentary. Don't be fooled by what you have read here. Lee Thompson poured his heart into the project only to be undermined by those he trusted and then dumped when Elton removed IHAVE as a beneficiary becuase of Matthew's friend prematuraly announcing Elton's support. Lee's telephone records, faxes, journals, hundreds of pages of documentation and witnesses proves all of it. Jose Partida filmed one press conference and can be sued for slander. Pure lies and filth from people Lee trusted, guaranteed. Mr. Partida, should we put it all out for people to see to clear Lee's name? Your company would go down the tubes in ten days or less for what you did with Elton and using him to raise funds after being told over and over not to.The reason it is not public is because it would drag innocent people into it and show how hate filled a lot of self proclaimed anti-hate people really are. Get your facts straight or shut the hell up. The Bear project, Elton's concert, all of it is because, Lee Thompson took the initiative and wanted people to love, not hate. I received my CD's I ordered as did my friends. the T-shirts, well if the artist who did the work had donated it as promised rather than demad thousands of dollars after the episode with Elton, it would have been there. the people who asked for refunds instead of allowing it to go towards the over 25,000 worth of bills Lee is now personally responsible for, will or have gotten them and they are not complaining here or bashing. The hate filled self serving ones are. Give Lee the credit and respect he deserves and stop telling lies or I and others will make all of this and all of the documentation public. It seems at this point that we are being forced to to protect a great human being. I have sat idly by and watched all of this. I have access to all of it and will not tolerate this malicious crap any longer. I hope I have made myself clear. STOP the HATE HERE!!!

Comments: A few points of clarification may be needed. The hike was originally planned to start in Canada. Then plans were changed to make it a hike through the U.S. I am of the impression the change was made after it appeared there would be more financial support from a hike going through major U.S. centers than through miles of Canada, where there are only small towns. I do not think there was any intention to deceive there, just a change in plans for the benefit of the cause. It is my understanding there was an unofficial agreement that Elton John would perform for IHAVE. I believe the information was released prematurely, possibly out of incredible excitement. Then events developed and Elton John was not able to sing for IHAVE. My perception is that the founder of IHAVE wanted to do what was right. He was not experienced at fund raising and the politics of running a charitable organization. Some mistakes were made, but I do not think those mistakes were made out of willful intent to hurt or to deceive.

Comments: Hello everyone, I am writing this message in regard to the next entry (#104). The author of the following message is entitled to their own opinion, but I feel that a person that wants to throw accusations around, should at least be big enough to state their own name, as well as how & where they have come up with their claims. While I am not, nor have I been a co-ordinator in any faction of the I.H.A.V.E. Foundation; I DID get involved with the organization early on. I donated monies in the good faith that I.H.A.V.E. was on the up & up. It is true that there have been problems, but I feel them to be the result of a man with a passion (Lee!) and desire to improve the world, but not the knowledge of HOW to work it all together, and the fact that everything came explosively fast & large while he was still trying to get a handle on it. So I feel that the author of the damning letter should at least state their name, though not neccessarily their e-mail address, as in this country, everyone has the right to face their accusor! NOW; The MOST important thing at this time, is not to find IF or WHERE blame should be placed, but that all of us that got involved because we believe that we (collectively) CAN educate the young, and help put an end to hate & violence, stick together and consider moving enmass to a more well developed organization with the same objective as we all feel that I.H.A.V.E. had. There is a small group of us (5...) that have met through the Message Board, and have been in close contact for sometime now, trying to figure a way to continue in this endeavor for peace. We have a few ideas, and are looking into a few organizations, that we feel will help. I ask that everyone PLEASE stick together, as one loud voice is so much more effective than 100 smaller sqeaks. Go to message boards, contact others and have regular meeting to come up with ideas of what can be done, then send one representative to another meeting with representatives from other groups... It CAN work! Thank you for listening! :-) Guy

Comments: A review of this organizations activities will reveal highly questionable patterns of deception. It actually started before Matt Shepard's death and centered around a quilt project regarding child abuse. They have latched onto one tragedy after another, asking and pleading for money. They claimed to be associated with Matthew Shepard's real friends, when in fact they were not. They announced a hike starting in Canada and appealed for money to people from there. They then announced plans to start the hike in Seattle and pleaded for money from the people there. Then they announced plans to start the hike in Billings Montana and pleaded for money from people there. They claimed to be associated with Elton John when they were not. They have also announced plans for a concert at a stadium in Denver. Only problem is, someone fogot to tell the stadium people about it. They have sold merchandise on the Internet without delivering it and have appropriated the names of very good people in their scam to get money. No, IHAVE, you are NOT an educational organization. There are many fine educational organizations out there who are doing a great job. You are not one of them. You are doing more harm than good by pretending to be one and stealing money from people who care and from people who CAN help. Do not give your money to IHAVE. All they will do is skim some off the top and MAYBE give some to legitimate organizations.

Comments: Within the last week or so, you have deleted two guestbook entries of mine, and now I find you have also deleted the link I added to my memorial site for Matthew Shepard. This amounts to unbridled censorship if not outright fraud. I am inclined at this point to consider any statement made by you or any person or organization affiliated with you to be pure sentimental fraud, bent on extorting money, services, or other things of value from the victims of your propoganda. If this were an open, public forum, you would not delete honest feedback or access to other websites which offer opinions different from your own. Such amounts to prior restraint and censorship, which, politically, is the first step in establishment of an authoritarian power structure. Since I myself have created a forum which does not censor the input of others, I will be initiating a full review of your actions regarding such. (I assume that you reviewed the website prior to deleting the link, so you are familiar with what and who you are protecting.)

We MUST make our memory of Matthew the beginning of the end of silent acts of hatred, and start holding every American accountable for ages of political hand washing. As I am able (currently out of work), I will be contributing to your work. I was curious as to why neither Paul Broussard nor Fred Mangione are included in your victim page. Both were murdered here in Houston and their murders were considered hate crimes. The FBI called Paul's murder "a gay-bashing". I have Paul's Mother's contact info if you would like it. Comments: As an active Pagan in my community, I too face much of the same fear, hate, and intollerance that the homosexual community must deal with. I support ALL human rights, and I think it's high time we made policies to crack down on hate crimes so that these things didn't happen. I mourn Matthew, and am angry for what has happened to him- and all the others in this country that are forced to hide who they are for fear of being harmed. Yet, I believe humans are basicly good souls, and if we take steps to show that we will not lie down and take this, I believe these cowards who strike out against innocent people in the name of "God" will find themselves the minorities. I cannot concive of any God approving of this. To all of you who have shown support to this great site, and to those who have suffered this loss, I salute you. Matthew please rest in peace. We will remember you, always.

The perpetrator had in her purse, handcuffs, duct tape and black gloves in addition to the loaded 357 magum gun. We prayed that we would be spared and we were, only to face 4 months of one sided, half truths, sensationalist news media coverage that literally crucified my husband and blamed us for the crime. The perpetrator pled guilty to a felony and was given probation in Greeley, CO. We sent condolences to the Shepard family and continue to pray for them. I plan to march and support the walk from Seattle to Ft. Collins. Sally Landes

Comments: Hi. Just thought I'd write a quick note to you. Matt's story hit me personally for a couple of different reasons. #1, the name we share (Matt). #2, I had a friend from high school who went to Laramie for college, also a Matt and also gay. I wrote a letter to the school paper here at Iowa State when I heard the news of Matt's death on tv that morning. I was mad and upset and talked of the harsh things that are done against gays for no reason. It was a really good letter. One of my friends here cut it out and put in on her cork-board in her room. She said she was telling everyong that her friend had written the letter and she was so proud. I still get angry when I think about what happened. I hope some eyes can be opened by what has happened. Can't believe the legislators in Wyoming voted down another hate crimes law. That's really sad. Well, thanks for your time. Matt Schuler Nevada, Iowa

Comments: I have read everything I can get my hands on concerning the tragic death of Matthew Shepard. (I somehow feel he would be embarrassed by all the attention he is receiving) He strikes me, as his mom has intimated, as having been a remarkable person. Not since Ryan White have I been so affected by the death of someone I did not know personally. I wish I would have known Matthew. I have cut out pictures of him and keep them around to make sure I don't forget - it could happen to any one of us. They remind me that the life of this beautiful person was taken simply because those people didn't like the kind of person he was. Well . . he was like me. An awful lot like me. I can't express the sympathy I feel for his mom and dad and his brother and his friends. I have shed more than a couple of tears over the tragic loss of this young life. I will be in Seattle on July 24th. Godspeed, Matthew. tpf

Comments: Dear Mr. Thompson, Thank you for providing a place for those of us who care about others to express our thoughts and feelings. I hope the IHAVE foundation will be a healing process for you. No one should ever go through what you and many others have experienced at the hands of cruel people, many of whom use the name of God as an excuse to torture and execute others emotionally and physically. As the mother of two sons ages 23 and 21, I also grieve for the Shepard family's loss. I don't know if I would have the strength to go on if it were one of my children. I realize how lucky I am to have them with me. I hope they know that Matthew is in a safe place and looking down on them and all of us. I am sure they never wanted this to be, but he has united so many loving, caring people to come forward and express their concern. It is nice to know we are out there in numbers far greater than the bad ones. Meanwhile, I grieve for all the dying children who come into this life with innocence and pure spirits and are damaged by intolerance and hatred. There are two phrases we can use to remind us what our lives should be about: One, the line from Jewel's song, "These Hands", where she sings, "And in the end, only kindness matters." The other from the Bible where it refers to faith, hope and charity(charity coming from the word caritas meaning to care for or love). "The greatest of these is love." Kindness and love.

I would also like to say to everyone: Please take care of each other and love each other, family and friends. It's important to accept one another for who they are and not try to change them if you might have a hard time accepting who they are and what they stand for. It's important to let them feel that they're loved for who they are, no matter what color their skin have, religion, or sex.

Comments: Hello, I read the news this evening and saw the story about Matt's mom. As there were many links to the news story, I pulled up each one individually. Each story brings tears to my eyes and a heart filled with pain. I believe we as a people can make comments of rage, and anger, but thoughs of us who have not ever been in this situation have no real knowledge of what each family is going through on a daily bases. My prayers are with you as I don't know as a mother if I would be capable of the strength that each of the families noted are going through on a minute by minute. We so often feel sorry for ourselves for such nothing things that happen in our daily lives. I realize how easy our life is. I am ashamed that such little inconviences are such hurdles, when other families have it so much harder. Our son is 22 years old and no matter what he is in life, or has done, or will do, he is the love of our life, just like Matt is to his family. When will the hate and violence stop? I realize that I am rambleing. I feel I want to put my arms around Mrs. Sheppard as well as every family and tell themr how sorry I am for her and for the society we represent. When the day is done, the trial, and other events are over she(they) will go home to their own homes to the empty rooms, Matt and the other children will never be there again to share the humor, the funnies, and the smiles. We as a society have become more and more enraged with life and one another. When will all this end?

I WILL NOT FORGET MATTHEW PERIOD!!!!he's touched me in a way I never dreamed possible; which I thank him for every day. As for the walk.. we will prevail....how can we fail with Matt guiding us along the path to the end of hatred & all violence. We will succeed; mark my words. Lee, thanks for taking my hand in the most sincere way one friend can offer to another; it means more to me than most anything else. You are right ther with Matt & Judy in my heart of hearts. Together WE ALL will win this one........4MATT.....Peace to all, Don W.

Comments: I learned about the hike from Kelly and Olivier and have been heartened by the response of the Teddy Bear Mailing List. I do not make bears, but I plan to feature the news about the Hike and about the donated teddy bears on one of my web pages each month until it is completed. I will also include a link to this site and encourage my visitors and friends to make a donation. My prayers are with you for success in your hike and, even more, for your success in education to abolish hatred.

My heart has broke over and over at all the violence against the gay community and the horrible death of James Byrd. James and Matthew had the right to live their life out in the open without any repercussions. Everyone in the world is different and that is why we live in such a wonderful country. Diversity is the key to acceptance of ALL. May you rest in peace Matthew and all others who have died by the hands of hatred and ignorance.

Comments: I have an e-mail address but for reasons of anonymity I will leave it off. These hate crimes sicken me. I have and will continue to pray for the family of Matthew and the others. I recently heard the story of Billy Jack Gaither on one of those late night news shows. Another tragic end to a loved son. No mother should ever have to loose a child expecially in such a horrendous way as these incidents. We are all Gods children deserving of love and respect and freedom from such acts of violence. No one in this country should have to fear for their life because of Race, Religion, Sexual preference, size, shape, gender, etc., etc., etc...... I also pray that God will have mercy on these humans, and I use the term loosly, who are capable of such acts of violence against fellow human beings. May God bless the families and loved ones of Matthew, Billy Jack, and any others and may the Hate Crimes Prevention Law be passed soon.

Comments: I am saddened to hear of these hate crimes, and saddened to think that another human being would want to kill an individual just because they didn't think along the same lines as they did. It saddens me to think that those same thoughts were in World War II when Hitler attempted to put away and rid the world of a great number of people, including gays. But we know how that turned out, and I think the world again needs to take stock of the same facts. History has a way of repeating itself. Please keep up the good work. I hope in some small way I can make a contribution to the cause of freedom and peace.

Comments: Hate against minorities and gays are closely linked. But gays are not a "protected class". This means we may be discriminated against at work, spit upon, have our lives threatned, denegrated, even cursed as we walk down the street or beaten without any legal recourse. Help stop the violance and hate against all people. Especially those that say "If you are gay, I'm gonna kill you!"

Comments: HI!! I am John!!!! I myself have seen and heard some of the most frightening thing that happens to a person that is gay, stright, bisexualy, because of race, regloin, whatever the case maybe it does happen no matter what!!!! The murder of MATTHEW SHEPARD was totally unexceptable!! I feel for his family and friends!! Therefore I feel the need to start a web site concerning nothing but MATTHEW SHEPARD!!! I honestly dont know why I feel this way BUT I DO!!!! There is a reason for us to be here or GOD would not have created us!!!! MATTHEW SHEPARD was a *SMART* man !!!! He always try to help make the world a better place for all type of people with different types of genders!!!!! Now that I have been reading about him and starting to do a site in his memory or name I just feel like I must fullfill the need to do so!!!!! Again I honestly dont know why but GOD has a reason for it so I must carry it out!!!! I will have it up and running as soon as I can!!!! My favorite quote which MATTHEW stood by to is: IF YOU CANT EXCEPT A PERSON FOR WHO THEY ARE THEN THATS THERE PROBLEM AND NOT YOURS!!!! I have stood by that for many years and always will just as much as MATTHEW did!!!!! The hate in this world must soon come to a stop it is totally unexceptable and there is NO EXCUSE for killing or just up and murdering someone just because of what they choose in life!!!! If you would really stop and think about it WHAT IF IT WERE YOU OR YOUR CHILD!? How would it make you feel!? PLEASE LETS STOP THE HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments: What between an antiquated computer and minimal computer literacy, I had thought I had signed the guestbook, but it turns out that I didn't. Let's hope it works this time. Actually, I found this site through the matthewsplace site now ownned by Mrs. Shepard. I doubt that I would have followed up if she hadn't indicated her support for this summer's hike. However, she has and I did. For a number of reasons, it's a remarkable site, and so, Lee are you. This site, I think, is the closestI've seen either to ann understanding of Matthew as he seems to have been (and, given my religious opinions, as I don't doubt that he still is), and certainly his family. There is a universality about matthew's short life and dreadful death that reaches far beyond any one cause or another. In the end, he (and we) are individuals, not causes, and perhaps in wishing to make him more than he was, we are making him less. Certainnly we do that if we substitute one hate for another. There are, I think, many rooms in Matthew's place, and it is good to see JonBennet Ramsey (hope I got the name and spelling right!) and James Byrd in residence as well. Because there is a universality for all of us. I myself identify with Matthew very closely not because I'm gay. I'm not. Unfortunately, I think Matthew would have been killed had he been straight too. He was the same weight and height I was when I was fourteen, and I was a very small fourteen year old. Being small, inoffenesive, and nerdy makes you a target for people who have to take their frustrations at the world out on the nearest vulnerable target. Matthew was all of those things, and had "vulnerability" stamped all over him. I was in that position for a difficult five years, and his death brought back a lot of very bad memories. I've also had to connntend with depression, although for completely different reasons. The poor guy had just about every card stacked against him. Perhaps that's why he touches us so deeply. Strangely enough, I also think we owe it to him and the others who are victimized in this way to ask ourselves if we could do what Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney are said to have done (they're entitled to a fair trial). If we are honest with ourselves, we have our darker angels, and we could be. It has been for me a distressing reflection in looking at many of the internet comments how many, in their understandable grief, give vent to those darker angels. I find myself unable to avoid recognizing them in myself, and only think I can keep them from taking over by knowing it. That's our common inhumanity. Lee, I found your "snail mail" address in the end, and the membership and pledge should reach you. I don't know how much more I can do (I got a little grandiose in the letter I sent you), but every bit helps. And for those of you who can't be alonng the hike route, never underestimate the power of moral encouragement, which some of us call prayer.

Comments: I can not even begin to imagine the pain and trauma that Matthew's family and friends have gone through. However, I can say, even though I know it will never bring him back, that Matt is in a beautiful resting place, where hate is not even known, where love and acceptance is all that matters, he is with our God, and the many angels that went before Matt. I know it is not my place to judge, but it is too bad that these people that think that hate and violence and phobia, rather it's homophobia or whatever, will not get to know Matt and the other victims as our God knows them, because they will not be there with Matthew and our God, as these sick people are not worthy of sharing the same Heaven as these people. All I can do though is pray that these people will see the light and change their ways before it is too late. This goes to "Rev." Fred Phelps as well, a true disgrace to Kansas. Please don't think all Kansan's are like him. My love and prayers are with everyone to stop the hate.

Comments: I want 1st to say that Lee is obviously one remarkable man. To get this site and the foundation where they are now is no minor accomplishment. I don't think that he was too sure of how to build a site when he started "Mathew's place", or exactly how to get everything started; But he sure as hell has! I was at "Matthew's place when it was 2 or 3 unfinished pages and a mailing list. He asked (and got) people to construct a nice site. He dealt with those saying it was not his place to HAVE that site, as he didn't KNOW Matt. (We ALL know Matt,...he is in all of us, and in everyone we know & love!) He sent us 27 (or more) e-mails a day, asking our opinions as to how HIS project should be handled! When the "I H.A.V.E. Foundation" came to be, I thought it was another group, and was consulted about a merger..."We should be one force of many, not many forces of one!" was my basic response! So after being out of touch for a bit, I return to find this grand and finely tuned site & foundation, of which I am proud and honored to be a member! My own small site; "Honor Diversity" has been in the works since late Feb. '98', and is NOT about or because of Matthew Shepard, but rather just that we are all different in some way, and that is a GOOD thing! Well, I do have more to say, but I will spread it (literally & deeply) around on the message board, chat room, etc. Again, Thank you Lee for just BEING!!! Love, Guy

Comments: Hi. Im truely sorry for your loss..i cant even explain in words how i felt when i 1st heard this story....Ive been watching the news and the totally awful things that happen to Matt sickens me greatly, Im gay 22yo and in a very small area town of Ohio and i know that hate is everywhere (I see it alot) but the extent of how serious a person can be, over something so choiceless, makes me very upset and sad, I only know Matt by TV and the news and I can see that he is a great person and he had courage. He was Himself to his family and his friends, and i commend him for that, from my experience, that there is alot to accomplish... from the story it has opened my eyes to see that there is also good people out there, i was surprised of the amount of support, being in a small town i tend to focus only on the negative, and not realize how people do look beyond the small differences, and acknowledge we are all human....... i would have been very happy to know Matt personally, and i hope his courage reflects on me someday Dennis and Judy stay strong, my support is with you...... Matt has become a peice of my heart, and i thank him for that, and as we all know, he is in a much better place now.. Chris

I don't think that we can in good conscience rest until there are more protections in place to prevent this needless violence. People need to know that it's not acceptable, in any circumstance, to bash someone just because of who they love and that they will not get away with it. When I think of what Matthew went through I cry even more, sometimes at college I'll just burst into tears becuase I really feel low. I sometimes feel trapped like I can't escape from my own life... I also know the physical suffereing that Matthew went through too! Someone I barely knew found out I was gay and he 'lured' me into making me think he was my friend. Fortunatly I was lucky, I only had cuts and scrapes - and an even worse state of mind. I wanted you to know that I think you have to be some of the best, most kind and caring parents there are. Comments: Why a feeling creature such as a human being can act upon another in such a manner is something that makes it a little harder to be a member of this race. I lost a friend April 11,1997 to a man who didn't like who she was. She was the most brutal murder in the state of Wisconsin since those of Jeffrey Dahmer. When I think of the man that did this, and of the guys and their girlfriends that hurt Matthew, I wish I knew why so I could better cope with all the violence in the world. The murderers, rapists, and batterers need to realize that everyone is someone elses son, daughter, best friend, lover, sister, confidant, and most of all....human. Praying for a better world for my children, had I any.

From what I have learned of Matthew Shepard, he would appreciate the way you are keeping this focused on all hate and violence and keeping it a human rights issue, not just a gay rights issue. That is exactly what it is in my opinion, a human rights issue. God bless Mrs.Judy Shepard, her family, and Lee Thompson.

Comments: Dear Mr. & Mrs. Shephard: I live here in Dhahran and I just want you both to know how my heart and prayers go out to you. I CANNOT imagine what pain and suffering you've gone through, but I can offer to you the knowledge that your son is among the angels in heaven and that his terrible death, which you must bear through your lives, is not in vain in that Matthew already has changed so many people's thoughts and minds regarding gay people and their acceptance/rejection into society. He is no less than Martin Luther King Jr. who represented the call to accept all people as equal and due the right of respect, tolerance, and even love. God Bless you as you continue to find the strength to live your lives and just know that Matthew is at great PEACE and God will send him down here every now and again to make sure you're OK and he'll be flying between your shoulders to give you help and support and guidance. I'm truly sorry and know that my thoughts and love are with you. Mark Matthes; Aramco P.O. Box 5454; Dhahran email: matthesma@rocketmail.com

Comments: Matthew, I never knew you. Yet, I feel that I have known you. You have touched so many people. I hope you know this. Perhaps, we can end this violent behavior once and for all. I cry when I think that I could have known you. Those who did this terrible thing robbed both of us from this privilege. I love you Matthew. I know that you are watching over all of us now. We will meet, someday. To Matthew's mother, you are a brave lady. My hat's off to you. We are all here for you. You are in my prayer's! To all my brothers and sisters out there: take care of yourselves. Be on your guard. Stick together. Practice and preach the words of peace and love! Anyone who would like to contact me may do so anytime.

Comments: By uniting with other's, we can make a difference. Let us all remind ourselves on a daily basis that acting on hate with any type of violence or any other means which would hurt another, is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. The key to creating a less violent world for all to live in is education. We hope you will support the carrying of the "Flame of Hope" On the International Hike Against Violence And Hate. The organizations involved in this 2,500 mile International hike need everyone's support to make it a huge success. By pledging even 1/2 of 1 cent, per mile, you will be a part of a change that is taking place around the world. That change creates a less violent, less hate filled world through education. Whether you offer to carry the torch through a town along the way in memory of victims in that area, purchase a pair of hiking shoes for one of the participants, or just tell a friend about our united mission, you will be a part of that great change. Thank You for your support on behalf of all of the organizations involved and their members. Please remember "Everyone is Someone's Child" May we all have the courage to do our part in making this a safer world for future generations. Lee Thompson

Comments: The I.H.A.V.E. Foundation has been created in an effort to raise an acute awareness to eliminate the horrific consequences of the hate and violence that unfortunately now exists in our country and to educate our children that this is not acceptable behavior. Please join us as a supporter/participant in the International Hike Againt Hate and Violence from Skagway, Alaska to Laramie, Wyoming this summer. A torch will be placed at Skagway commencing the hike to illuminate our path.
